Guyinism Interrupted?

December 22, 2009

No, I’m not planning to OD, nor in any danger of doing so, nor do I shoplift.

In an attempt to interrupt the growing guyinist and “mens’ rights” backlash, some feminists have decided that women need to come off as more reasonable when it comes to gender issues.

Yes, I know what you are thinking- “‘women’ and ‘reasonable’ in the same sentence?  But, at least some  – OK, just a handful of - women are sounding almost, well, reasonable. Check out this excerpt at http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/sexist/2009/12/07/sexist-comments-of-the-week-when-feminists-who-to-the-mras/ :

“… sometimes I’m afraid we oversimplify certain principles, or refuse to say certain things, because the actual complexities or truths at hand don’t feel “safe” or in line with our predetermined talking points and agreed-upon theories. …

It seems like every time I write about some not-so-admirable thing that ladies do, someone weighs in to say that I’m not presenting the gender positively enough and/or giving aid to the enemy. And I don’t shitting care about that, to be totally blunt. For one, I don’t think The Enemy reads Tiger Beatdown, and for two, I care about writing the truth, because I don’t feel feminism is served or ever can be served by ignoring the truth and instead telling each other whatever is most uplifting or whatever we most want to hear. …”

And The Sexist herself, Amanda Hess, thinks guys, like women, are victims of “the patriarchy” – whateverthefuck that really is anymore.

OK, I said only a handful of women are getting reasonable – that’s why we still, and will long, need Guyinism.

My response, which at this writing remains the last word in The Sexist’s discussion on the subject:

If substantial numbers of women, including feminists, start becoming reasonable with respect to gender issues, what will us Guyinists have left to mock, and what will I have left to mock on my blog, “The Balls Monologues” (…)?

Never mind. The womans’ movement jumped the shark more than a quarter century ago. We can have fun extracting a little payback for a while.

I guess we should take it as a compliment that feminists have been forced to discover the concept of buy-in – even if they still refer to us as “The Enemy.”
